Our father, who had dementia, stayed here for respite care during a family wedding several years ago. The staff didn't track his fluid intake, he was quickly admitted to the hospital, and we reported them to the State of New York. They investigated and put Brookdale on a remediation plan. My father never walked again and had to enter a full care nursing home.

My dad lived here for 7 months. In that time, he was sent to the Emergency Room because he was "agitated" or any issue where they thought that there might be some exposure on their end. This practice is to transfer both the risk and the cost to Medicare (often thousands of dollars in unnecessary tests) and from their standpoint, to "calm down the patient." Have you ever known anyone--particularly someone with dementia--to be calmed down by a trip to the ER? They are VERY thinly staffed at night. One time, I went to visit and 2 aides bet each other $20 that the other one could find my dad. They found him asleep in another resident's room. The staff didn't bother calling me when they told the ER attending that my dad couldn't return--because he was no longer "ambulatory". It was the middle of the night in a Buffalo snow storm. I would never put a loved one in this place again. It was my first rodeo. I learned more than I ever wanted to know.

It was a Beautiful and busy place when my father age 84 came to tour the facility with me. It was just after 1 pm, residents were starting to move about after lunch. Residents looked Happy, many staff were mingling about, and the place smelled and looked clean. I loved the tour, even the shared room was spacious and bright. Residents interacted positively with us. But in the end, dad chose another facility because he new another resident at the other place. But I have to say the the professionalism of the admin staff, especially Katie, and the other staff that was mingling, was refreshing.
