My aunt and uncle were recently residents at Brookwood in Greer, SC. Had Brookwood conducted a proper assessment, it should have been clear that their facility was not an appropriate placement for them. Sadly, they fell through the cracks of the system. My uncle even suffered a fall on Brookwood’s broken sidewalk, resulting in a fractured rib. When he was taken to the emergency room, social services should have been contacted due to my aunt’s and uncle’s extremely poor hygiene (which was not Brookwood’s fault). However, once Brookwood staff realized they required a higher level of care—specifically memory care or a nursing home—a social worker should have been involved. I live out of town but traveled to Greer to ask about Brookwood’s process for determining whether someone is a good fit for their facility. The Executive Director told me that “a thorough assessment” is always done. Based on what happened, that clearly did not occur. If it had, my aunt and uncle would not have been accepted as residents. Instead, Brookwood took their money, later confronted them about their hygiene issues, and allowed them to leave without ensuring their safety. They ended up living in their car before going to stay with my 83-year-old mother. In my opinion, Brookwood had both a legal and moral responsibility to contact social services or their Medicare provider once they recognized that my aunt and uncle needed a higher level of care. Thankfully, we have since located another facility that is properly assessing their needs and helping determine the next steps for appropriate care. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this senior living facility.

Brookdale provided care for my Father in Law for over 4 years. We can’t say enough positive things about how professional and caring they were with our Father and Mother. They provided him with the upmost care of palliative treatment when needed. They communicated with us often and answered any of our questions. No wonder our Father thought so highly of Joely and her team. He would smile when he saw them walk into the room and joke with them constantly. We can never thank Brookdale and the Hospice team at Traditions Health enough, for the way they honored our parents until their last breath.

The main reason my mom is at Brookdale Brushy Creek is the clean, home-like environment created by the building, its porches, the lobby, the food, the activities and the staff. This comfortable feeling that we encountered when visiting Brookdale Brushy Creek for the first time is why my son and I wanted Grandma/Mom here. I am very happy with the nursing care my mom has received since she came here. When I need help as I age, I would not hesitate to move there as well.

Brookdale Brushy Creek came along when I needed them most and they set the bar high. Immediately bringing hospice in for my father and taking care of my mom like she was one of their own. They still take care of her and make sure she is doing good. The genuine staff is heartwarming when they welcome her back if she has been to an appointment or something, always concerned about her well-being.
