The Savoy Gracious Retirement Living

About 16 months ago, my grandmother moved from her home in New York to the Savoy down here in Florida due to the death of my grandfather. At first, I was worried that she would be lonely without her family and friends close by, but after seeing her at the Savoy, my worries are over! This place is absolutely wonderful!! The staff are kind, attentive, funny, caring, and best of all, they truly care about the happiness and safety of my grandmother! The facility on Michael Blake Blvd in Winter Springs has not only amazing and charming residents that my grandmother has come to know, but they also have a staff that anyone would be proud to take care of their relative!! Each day, my grandmother tells me about all the fun places she goes, the new movies she watches in the onsite movie theatre, the amazing walks she goes on around the grounds, and especially about the amazing people she encounters each day! I could go on, but I will end with a simple thank you to the entire staff at this facility! My grandmother now has a new place to call home, and I couldn’t be happier!! Keep up the great work!!

We came here for a week with the Hawthorne Resident Travel Program (since we are residents in another Hawthorne facility.) We found the residents and staff at The Savoy to be the friendliest people we have met in all four of the other Hawthornes we have visited. They were very welcoming and happily included us in all activities. We attribute a lot of this positive attitude to the leadership of the Managers Jan and Rich Stemmerman. They are fun people and really care about the residents and this permeates throughout the entire organization. Everyone cheerfully does their job and it seems very well organized. Reem, the Activity Coordinator, is very creative and full of energy and she brings this energy to all the fun activities she organizes. The residents are excited because SHE is excited! She is a positive addition to the organization. Kevin, the Travel Coordinator is very caring and professional. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and look forward to when we can return. The Savoy is a wonderful community for independent seniors that love to engage socially, enjoy great meals, participate in community events, and spend time with friendly neighbors. The staff truly cares about its residents and community partners. In addition, the mgmt team is always available for connecting and chatting about any concerns or new initiatives.

I’m very grateful I found this place for my mom. She deeply enjoyed her time here. The residents are wonderful, and there’s a lot of activities each day. It’s kind of like being on a cruise ship. You get a newsletter every morning with the activities of the day. There’s movies and popcorn at night, plus soft serve ice cream available anytime of the day! The food is decent, and there’s lots of celebrations and special occasions. People from the community often come to visit and offer interesting events, such as caroling during the holidays. There’s dance lessons, yoga, even cardio drumming. The activity coordinator is really fun. They welcome families to visit, and there’s lots of events that families can participate in, such as fall festival. The Savoy is clean and well-managed (the manager lives onsite), and they have in-house, physical therapy and even a hairstylist available for additional costs. The building itself has a lot of nice amenities, such as a heated pool, small library, outdoor fire pit, pool table, and chapel. The studio apartments don’t have a kitchen, but a microwave and toaster oven work just fine here. Plus there’s a full kitchen downstairs that’s available to the residents to use and is fully stocked with utensils, pots and pans, and anything you need to make a nice meal. Note that this place is not assisted living, but for those who need extra help, I believe The Savoy contracts with a company to provide some services for extra fees. Like any place, there’s a few areas in need of improvement. The meals are all sit down affairs, with waitstaff serving the food, and they take a long time, so breakfast is a 1- 2 hour event. Lunch is the two hour affair, and supper is similar. I wish they had a grab and go fridge (especially for breakfast) for those who just want a quick meal, especially because the place is pricey and that price includes food (it also includes utilities and internet). My mom would often eat a few meals each day in her room to avoid the long meal times. Also, the residents like to complain about things, but I think compared to what’s available in the area, this place is just fantastic, if you can afford it. And as I mentioned, it’s a bit pricey, and they seem to raise their prices every year. On the positive side, it’s a month-to-month contract so you’re not locked into paying rent for a year. There’s minor issues such as the quality of the internet, and my mom’s shower didn’t drain properly and they never were able to fix it, but they have on-staff maintenance and are very good at providing help to the residents. My kids enjoyed visiting my mom here (especially because of the soft serve!), and we are always welcome to join my mom at meals for a small additional cost. In short, for those who don’t want to live alone or who want to connect with others, this place is just a wonderful option in the area.
