The Residence at Summer Street

Our experience with The Residence at Summer Street was traumatic and completely unacceptable. My 83-year-old mother uprooted her life to move into what we were promised would be a supportive, well-run environment. Instead, she was met with disorganization and neglect from day one. We moved her in over a holiday weekend and were never told there would be no staff available, no orientation, no support, and the only administrative person on site was the head chef. Her unit had no air conditioning during 90+ degree weather and no hot water. Despite repeated complaints, nothing was fixed. Administration told us this was “unacceptable” and promised follow-up and support. No one ever called or showed up. The lack of care was alarming. When my mother cut her leg, no nurse came. A staff member told her to use her own Band-Aids, and the promised follow-up with a nurse that never happened. When she needed help showering, she was left standing in a towel and told, “sorry dear, we can’t shower you today,” due to no hot water and poor pressure. After just three days, we had to remove her for her safety. There was no effort to resolve anything. They simply let her go. Adnan Tahirovic, the Executive Director, told our family my mother would be treated “as his own mother.” That promise was completely disregarded. Ellen Colby and her team presented one version of this facility and delivered another. To make matters worse, we were charged for two additional months after she had moved out and after submitting a formal termination notice. The fact that billing continued while she was no longer even there says everything about their oversight. This was not just disappointing. It was unsafe, undignified, and deeply distressing. Proceed with extreme caution.

They make the community feel warm, alive and have loads of interesting activities to choose from. In the heart of Stamford, there is a lovely, beautifully-appointed senior community that instantly felt like home the second we walked in.

Residence of Summer Street is a wonderful place to age. Its located in the heart of Stamford, with easy access to all that Stamford has downtown has to offer. The staff is always very welcoming and helpful, and they are wonderful partners with many of the resources in the community to help support families with any needs that may arise. If you haven't had the opportunity to visit them I suggest you do.

We are in the process of evaluating senior living options for my parents and The Residence at Summer Street stood out and remains at the top of our list. I randomly walked in for a tour as we feel this unannounced approach gives us a great sense and everyday feel for a community. After a warm, friendly welcome from the staff as well as a few residents in the lobby and social areas, the positive experience continued as I received a tour led by The Residence’s Executive Director. Dawn left no stone unturned and her deep knowledge of and enthusiasm for senior living and the overall operations were evidenced throughout the tour, including knowing the residents and their family members visiting on a first name and personal basis. It was encouraging to see this level of hands-on, personable and genuine care and attention to details, especially from the company’s leadership. By the end of the tour most, if not all my questions were answered before I could ask and I walked away feeling very confident that not only would my parents’ immediate needs be taken care of but that the community and care would be a fit long-term. This stage in our lives is very challenging for all involved and presents difficult decisions; it was a relief to walk away from that experience with greater confidence!
