Heartbreaking Experience — Discrimination, Neglect, and Loss of Dignity My experience at Shaker Gardens Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing in Beachwood, Ohio was deeply disappointing and emotionally draining. I entered this facility seeking a supportive, caring environment — a place where dignity and compassion are part of daily life. Instead, I encountered discrimination, neglect, and a troubling abuse of power that left me feeling disrespected and unsafe. Staff often ignored my basic needs and spoke in ways that felt dismissive and demeaning. Instead of receiving understanding or empathy, I was met with coldness and condescension. At times, the lack of responsiveness bordered on emotional neglect, leaving me to feel invisible in a place meant for healing and support. There were repeated situations where I felt power was used to intimidate rather than assist. Residents deserve to feel secure and heard — not silenced or made to question their worth. Unfortunately, the culture within this facility appeared to prioritize authority and convenience over compassion and accountability. I share this review not to harm, but to speak truth and promote change. Assisted living and skilled nursing facilities should be places of kindness, equality, and care — not environments where residents fear mistreatment or discrimination. If you or your loved one are considering Shaker Gardens, please approach with awareness and ask detailed questions about staffing, resident rights, and how concerns are handled. Transparency matters, and everyone deserves to live with respect and dignity. I even have pictures of the incidents I witnessed and the environment that they are in.

I could not give zero stars. Gave one star because there were a few employees who care. My father was a patient there for about a month October thru November. He was neglected so bad. Ended up in ER 3 times in one month. Twice for a clogged feeding tube and once because he was so severely dehydrated along with other issues. ER said he was in bad shape. Nursing staff did nothing. I was the one who told them my father needed to go to the hospital. He was so dehydrated he couldn't talk. Spoke with Director of Nursing Monique before this happened. Never followed up on any orders. Was suppose to schedule my father for his peg tube procedure. Lied to us and told us it was scheduled. She should be replaced with someone who does their job. Many issues with her. My father had a newly bought comforter taken. They didn't follow Cleveland Clinic orders. My father was on a feeding tube. To keep his mouth from being dry they were suppose to let him swish his mouth with water several times a day. Didn't do most of time. The place is filthy and dirty. One night my father asked for an extra blanket and was told they could not give him one. The next day we found out that the thermostat in his room was turned completely off with temps in low 30's. His face mask for breathing treatments would be on floor. We would come in and have to clean. Trash on floor. Poop would be on his blanket and socks. We would have to change. Flies in room and hallway window. They were aware of this. Along with having to deal with issues with my father we would be asked by residents in assisting living for money. Some would go across the street to purchase beer and walk thru main entrance. Receptionist eating full meals at desk. The list goes on. I would never recommend this facility. The Director of Nursing needs to be replaced. After leaving hospital we had him transferred to a much better facility. Will be contacting Board of Health and other agencies involved.
