My mom and dad moved to Red Hills Retirement Resort about three and a half years ago. It was the best retirement facility in town by far back then. The first managers were very responsive and attentive to complaints and concerns of residents. Since they left it has been a constant turnover in resident managers. The last husband and wife team who ran the place into the ground were finally terminated. So many residents complained about various issues yet Headquarters did nothing. It took a visiting manager who had to deal with all the resident complaints to realize how bad things had gotten there. Even though management at company HQ had been notified about the issues. They have not utilized the sprinkler system for the grounds in almost 3 years. Most of the trees and shrubbery have a fungus growth on them now that will require them to be removed and replaced. My moms apartment smells so musty that she has to purchase Damp Rid moisture removers at her own expense and keep them in her closets. Her next-door neighbor has the same issues, but hers was so bad she actually had some sort of mold growing on her furniture. She finally had to purchase a dehumidifier for her apartment. There are others who have the same issues in their apartments. My mom’s apartment would also leak from the closet where the air conditioner return was located. She reported this 4 or 5 times but the maintenance guy could never figure out what the issue was so when the water eventually dried up they just forgot about it. So much water would leak that it would flood an area of carpet in her guest bedroom, as well as an area in her living room. Finally, while the guest manager was visiting, he hired a plumbing company to come in and they discovered that there was a water leak behind the drywall of the air conditioning return closet. The management would never call anyone out on a weekend whether it was an electrical or plumbing issue because they did not want to pay the after hours fees. They also do not have a maintenance man on duty for the weekend. So if residents have a plumbing issue or their air conditioner goes out, they are forced to wait until Monday or later to get it seen about. Also, because there is only one maintenance man for such a large facility, it can take up to two weeks for him to get around to checking on an issue. While the food was initially good, it has gotten continually worse over the years. So many of the folks complain about the food, but nothing ever changes. Recently, several couples have moved in and then moved out in less than three months. There is constant turnover with the kitchen and wait staff. They told us when my parents moved in that they were going to go back to formal dining where you sat down and a waiter would take your order, instead of forcing these folks to go through what is basically a Buffet line. This has not happened. The cost of living there goes up every year without fail. This is no small expense, and these folks deserve better than what they are getting. It is sad that Red Hills Village has gone from being the top notch facility in Tallahassee to where it is now. There used to be a 1 to 2 year wait to get in, whereas now there are constant vacancies. We keep hoping that things will change for the better, because my mom really likes the area there and does not want to have to pack up and move again at her age. ***Due to the fact extremely damp environment in the apartment as I mentioned above, we bought a dehumidifier for mom’s bedroom closet and it fills up within 5 hours. These are not expenses these residents should have to be paying. Mom’s neighbors room is even worse than moms about moisture and musty moldy smells. They recently sent down a manager from corporate, but he did not even attend the community meeting to listen to residents complaints while he was there. He was on the premises, but apparently was too busy on his laptop to attend the meeting.

I am a visiting home health PT and former recreational director for assisted living communities. The recreation program there seems top-notch. However, I have had several residents tell me that it's so cold in the hallways and public areas, that they stay in their apartments more than they'd like.

I have been part of the Red Hills for a little over a year. I wake up grateful to be part of this family. The meals are top notch! I really enjoy the transportation to local shopping and outings to local restaurants. It’s a gift!

Love my space and location. Food could be better but like eating cafeteria style at a time I choose. Wish you would buy a new ice cream machine that doesn't break. Nice people.
