When we were looking for independent/assisted living for my mom, we toured 14 different communities from Issaquah to Everett, back down to South Seattle and all the points in between. (Let me stop briefly here to give a shout out to all of the ERA communities… multiple ones made our top picks list.) While we discovered many excellent places, the one that really stood out as right for mom and right for us was Ida Culver House Broadview. The location is exceptionally convenient. The rooms are lovely, some with views all the way down to the water. The grounds are beautiful, and really something special in spring and fall. Parking is good, both for residents and visitors. The services offered are comprehensive. We ate at the dining room with mom many nights; we always enjoyed the food, and the servers were wonderful. Every one of the staff that we interacted with at Ida Culver were fantastic, top-tier, kind, knowledgeable and helpful, and helped us through an incredibly tough year. One of the major points we considered when picking Ida Culver was their scope of care. While we initially went into this with the intent of mom being able to enjoy all the incredible amenities that the main campus’s independent and assisted living had to offer, we knew her condition would likely necessitate a move to memory care or more. What hadn’t been clear before the move though was how far her condition had actually progressed, and how rapidly it would continue to do so. It became clear very quickly that mom already needed memory care, and just 9 or 10 months beyond that her condition eventually outstripped even the scope of memory care. Though mom has had to move again, this is where I really want to express my gratitude to the entirety of the staff at Ida Culver. This past year has been horrifically stressful, and so, so very much of this has been entirely new and alien to me. Mom’s condition deteriorated fast enough that we’ve never really seemed to get much of a moment to breathe, let alone get properly “settled.” And during all of these stressful, scary transitions, all the folks at Ida Culver have been so incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. At each step, they’ve worked with us, talked with us, answered our questions, and connected us with incredible resources and amazing people that we would have never been able to find on our own. It would have been ideal if mom could have gotten to enjoy more of… well, everything. But having such a caring team backing us up, helping us figure out the next step, and continuing to answer questions even after we’ve moved has been such an incredible thing, truly a blessing.

My father and some friends are currently living at the IDA Culver House, Broadview in Seattle. I have had dinner with them a number of times. Every time I visit the Ida Culver house, I am just so impressed with the quality of the staff. One of the places where the staff has an opportunity to really shine is in the dining room. Every time I am there, I am just so impressed with how the staff handles their roles, how kind and engaging they are with the residents. At the end of pretty much every meal, "someone" seems to always mentions how great the staff is.

I moved my two parents, aged 83 and 87, into Ida Culver in early December 2023, after putting them on the wait list in May. My initial tour of Ida Culver with Pam Perry was one of my first interactions with staff at any facility, and she remains my gold standard for helping navigate this complex emotional, logistical, and financial process. From the jump she provided clear communication, incredible patience, helpful perspective, timely follow-up, and accurate expectation-setting about how long the process would take. My subsequent experience with the rest of the staff at Ida Culver, from the front desk, to the Resident Assistants, to the Assisted Living nurses, to the social worker Leah, has been similar. This is a special place, staffed by people who genuinely care about what they do and the people that live there. Furthermore, the community of residents itself is amazing. My wife knew several current & former residents & their family through her church, and all of them noted this same thing - that the residents showed genuine care for each other. This was how Ida Culver initially rose to our short list of places to consider, and it has borne out from the moment my parents took their first tour, through their first 2 weeks of their living there. When we pulled into the parking garage on moving day, we happened to run into the resident who had been assigned to be my parents' "resident guide". She said "are you Ray & Carolyn?" and proceeded to give them the warmest, most patient welcome. Throughout the day, most people we encountered knew who my parents were and all of them welcomed them with open arms. My father cried repeatedly for happiness at the people that day. One week after the move, my mother had a stroke and spent 3 days in Swedish Cherry Hill, making an already complex and stressful time even more so - especially because my dad, who has some dementia, was experiencing significant confusion and it wasn't clear whether he could be on his own. The nurses, Pam, and many others on the staff were on it, helping organize concrete support for my dad, coordinate care for my mom when she returned from the hospital, and keeping staff informed. I was repeatedly impressed how well informed the staff were about my parents' situation, and again, the care they showed making sure that not only they were OK, but that I was too. Ida Culver has two other standout attributes: it has a very low entry fee ($7500), versus many places in the city that charge hundreds of thousands of dollars to enter, and it does not require residents to move in order to change from "independent living" to "assisted living" (AL). AL is just a higher level of services which you can add as needed. Given the immense effort involved in the move, this is a huge benefit, and one we're already taking advantage of 2 weeks in, to tailor the services for my parents to their needs. Ida Culver is not perfect. Alongside all the experiences I list above, there have been moments when I've been frustrated by the amount of paperwork, the need for me to help coordinate across the staff, the difficulty of truly getting oriented to all of Ida Culver's services both for my parents and for me. However, much of this is attributable to it being staffed by humans :), and to the unusually stressful circumstances of our move, including the long distance, my parents' lack of preparation, and my mom's stroke. The five-star review feels deeply earned to me on balance, because perfection is not possible in this phase of life. The essence of it is dealing with unexpected and sometimes frightening events, and the most important ingredients for responding to those are empathy, patience, and experience, and Ida Culver shows all of these in spades. (PS all of this is without even getting into the food & the dining room, which are legitimately awesome... I eat there *happily* every time I visit my parents, and they feel the same way.)

My father lived in the Terrace community for over two years. He had memory issues as well as physical needs and staff patiently and kindly supported him on both fronts. He especially enjoyed the wonderful parties and celebrations, music, games, dog visits, gardens, and the very personal warmth that many staff shared in both caring for him and conversing with him. His own special gifts of singing and light-heartedness were appreciated and encouraged and we were fortunate that he was able to stay there until he passed at 100, cared for till the end by very loving RAs and nurses of the Terrace as well as Hospice and family. We will always be grateful for this kind place for the last years of our father's life.
