Ashford Place Health Campus

I am deeply disappointed and seriously concerned about the care my father received at this facility. My father has significant swallowing difficulties and was placed on a mechanical soft diet by his physician for safety reasons. Despite this, I was contacted by the facility and informed that his mechanical soft diet had been discontinued because he requested “real food.” That explanation is extremely concerning to me. A medically prescribed diet related to swallowing safety is not comparable to a patient simply choosing between two foods they prefer. When a patient has a physician-ordered texture modification because of swallowing difficulties, any change in that plan should be supported by an appropriate clinical assessment and medical direction. I repeatedly asked the facility to explain who authorized the change, what assessment was performed, when it was performed, and what documentation supported removing the physician-ordered diet. Rather than receiving straightforward answers, I was eventually told that the facility would need to involve its legal team before responding to my questions. As a family member advocating for a seriously ill patient, I find that response extremely troubling. I am not making assumptions about the intentions of the staff, nor am I claiming to know exactly what caused my father’s subsequent medical problems. My concern is about the process and communication surrounding a significant change to a medically ordered safety precaution. Families should not have to fight to understand why a physician-ordered diet was discontinued. Patients with swallowing difficulties deserve careful assessment, appropriate precautions, proper documentation, and clear communication between their healthcare providers and caregivers. My father is dealing with advanced cancer and is already extremely vulnerable. I entrusted this facility with his care because I believed he would be monitored and protected when I could not physically be there. Instead, I was left with serious unanswered questions about a change in his care that I believe deserved much more careful attention. I strongly encourage families considering this facility to ask detailed questions about how physician orders are followed, how dietary changes are authorized and documented, and how concerns from family members are handled. My father deserves to be treated with dignity, caution, and respect—and his family deserves clear answers when advocating for his safety.

My father was recently admitted to Ashford Place in Shelbyville IN for the second time. Everything about this facility is great. From the nurses, administrator's, kitchen staff, and assistants are professional and always caring. Understandably this is a hard job, but they always show they care. The food they serve is great and they have a wide variety of choices. The facility is always clean and offer daily activities. Care facilities typically get a bad reputation, sometimes with good reason. During my sometimes-daily visits for months on end. I've never had anything but positive experiences. The staff, administration, and facilities should be recognized for the good care they provide.

Could NOT be happier with all the things Mom is doing! The activity enrichment director and staff had mom doing things I never thought she would do! They keep her happy and busy! I am sooooo grateful for all they do! They take her out to Karaoke, lunches, music, etc. The nurses and aides are very nice and loving also! One aide brought her dog in to see mom on her day off! Housekeeping, Food and Therapy staff are also TOP notch! Not only is mom treated as family, but so am I! Thank you Ashford for all you do!!!

My mother lived in the Assisted Living section of Ashford Place for about 8 years. She did have a couple of brief stays on the medical side. She received wonderful care. The staff was very kind and loving to her. Toward the end of her life (she died at 102) she probably needed a little more help than most of the residents. The staff went out of their way to help her because they knew of her wish to stay in her "home". My mother in law is currently a resident in AL at Ashford, and she went there because of mother's positive experience . I would not hesitate to give Ashford Place a high recommendation.
