Two years both of my parents were there. My Dad passed this past March. Both of them have dementia. We moved my mom to the third floor from the 1st floor for "extra care" after Dad passed and if you google it, shows up as a memory care unit-it is not. In Mom's confusion and grief there was little to no help and her symptoms worsened. It was common place to see "caregivers" on the third floor sitting for hours- I have witnessed family members asking for help and they still sit. MULTIPLE emails to the "Executive Director" and ZERO return messages or accountability for what was going on under her roof. Outside of the hospice staff, the assistant manager and the front desk staff there is very little to be offered in the way of competent care. Everything is al a carte. You pay thousands to continue to address the same issues you did when they were living at home all at the cost of thousands. The "Executive Director" simply ignores things. We were forced to move Mom out of state where in the month she has been there we have had more help, interaction and input on top of weekly case conferences than we did in the two years at WV. This place could be a gem. Sadly, the person in charge sees it as only a job and nothing more.

In May of 2025 we visited the facility looking for a place to move our very elderly parents per their request from an assisted living home they are currently in. The visit went well and we as a family (including our elderly parents) made a decision that we were going to move them. I will note the elderly parents never visited as they are some mobility challenges which we were very clear about. We signed a contract in 5/22 with a move in date of 5/29. Our parents changed their mind that weekend which was Sunday before Memorial Day that they couldn’t move it would be too much for them to handle and so they decided to cancel. We called the Village on Tuesday morning after Mwmorial Day to advise them they can’t do the move and they immediately refused to refund our money even though it was before the move in date telling us the contract was signed and we are on hook for the 90 day contract. The enhanced care company that contracts with Winter Village that was going to service one of our parents had no issue cancelling because we hadn’t really moved in yet and no care or service had been provided. We have now been going back and forth with the Executive Director Katie since that date with still no acceptable resolution. We have asked for the corporate contacts to discuss directly with and still no information provided. I believe they are now owned by Provincial? Our parents are as we stated earlier very elderly and change their mind much like many elderly do. Life just isn’t the same in your later years it seems and now they have to deal with this. This is such a disappointing, disgraceful situation when you have elderly parents in their late eighties and early nineties that are just trying to live the rest of their lives as comfortably as possible and need the money to keep paying for their current situation and you have a big corporation that won’t and for some reason can’t understand the situation so they are refusing to refund their deposit. They now say they are working on some sort of a partial refund but days have gone by again with no contact. This is so unacceptable and greedy. Current and future residents need to beware. What we thought was a nice place has become a nightmare for our family. We had the best intentions with our aging parents but anyone that has been in this situation knows that it’s very hard for aging people to be comfortable with any change. I would think that a place that is in the business of serving most elderly people would have a good knowledge of these situations that almost occur daily with decisions they make. We are still contemplating further action potentially getting a legal consult but felt compelled to share our situation with others. Do not let anyone pressure you into signing anything and make sure there is some type of cooling off period for the affected party to think through to make the final decision that is right for them. The disgraceful part of all of this is the move in never took place so this company really had no invested monies other then time to show us the place and a few drapery changes in the vacant room which we offered to pay for both. We are beyond frustrated with the management of this place and the corporate owners and would never recommend anyone to deal with them in what is an already stressful life situation.

Abby and the entire team supported us in every aspect of transitioning my loved one into his apartment. They truly cared about his well being and went out of their way even through text messages late at night, weekends and holidays to assist us. The food was very good, much better than local restaurants. They checked on him every two hours and if needed would contact family if it was necessary. From the cleaning staff, to Ryan at the front desk to Christaine social activities director, all of them I consider family to this day.

Independence Village provides the best level of service for all residents. The food is great, the activities are varied and plentiful, and the staff are incredible. I love that they honor the residents who have served in the Armed Forces as well.
