I wish I could give a ZERO star rating! My dad was at The Blake with my mom from 11/30 thru 2/6. Some of the staff members were wonderful to my dad. My dad was allowed to live with my mom in Assisted Living, even with his dementia, but after a week, I began to have concerns about his anger towards my mom. I met with the executive director, director of wellness, and a nurse practitioner about my concerns and wanted him to be moved to Memory Care. The director of wellness had also suggested on different occasions that my parents should be separated, but at that meeting, they were in agreement that my dad remain with my mom in Assisted Living, but with some interventions with medication and more staff interaction. About a week after that meeting, my dad found a box cutter in an unsecured area on the first floor (this was verified by a detective at the scene) and cut himself innumerable times. While he was hospitalized, I was contacted by the executive director for to inform me that when my dad came back, I would need to provide a sitter 24/7 for 2 weeks for my dad for the safety of other residents, should my dad become aggressive. What about my dad’s safety? Had he been placed in a secure environment, this wouldn’t have even happened. And they expected me to foot the bill for a sitter, even in Memory Care, because of their negligence in locking a door. We had no intention of returning! Please thoroughly investigate any Assisted Living/Memory Care that you are considering for your loved one. By all means, take the tour, but then visit unannounced before placing your loved one. Once you’ve found a facility that meets your needs, visit frequently and thoroughly monitor everything—bills, medications, how medications are managed, etc. Most of these facilities have high powered malpractice lawyers within their corporation to fight against any claims brought against them, leaving residents and families with very little recourse. It’s heartbreaking!!

My grandfather lives in this community and our experience has been great. The staff is attentive, friendly, and helpful. My grandfather has made friends and he has really came out of his shell since being at The Blake at Baxter. Moving him here was the not only the best decision for our family, but also for him.
