Our family has had our mother-in-law at Sunrise of Staten Island for several years now, and I can honestly say we’ve had nothing but an outstanding experience from day one. The level of care here is truly exceptional. The clinical team knows her so well at this point, and they treat her with the same patience and warmth they’d show their own family. Anytime we’ve had a concern or a change in her needs, they’ve been right there guiding us, explaining everything, and making sure she’s comfortable and safe. The community itself is spotless every time we visit. You can tell the staff takes great pride in keeping everything clean, organized, and welcoming. Her room is always well kept, and the accommodations are truly beautiful. We are truly grateful for Sunrise of Staten Island, and we truly recommend this community.

My experience with my wife in the memory unit at Sunrise was so bad that even the staff couldn’t believe it. First of all, my wife has fronto-temporal dementia but is still cognizant in many ways. I was assured there would be activities to keep clients active, but this entailed sitting in a chair all day watching cat videos. I was told they would go downstairs and mingle with the other unit, but that was clearly not on the agenda. The nightmare began on the day we checked in. We were told to arrive promptly at 3:30 for the orientation and welcome. When we arrived, nobody was there to greet us. The lady at the desk pointed to the elevator and we went upstairs. The aides were surprised to see us, with one worker telling me that I would discover the place was terrible – and I did. The food was execrable. The first night they served us a piece of white fish with a yellow slime on it, with roast potatoes and broccoli. The dish was ice cold. I don’t mean cold like not as hot as you’d like it. I mean out-of-the=refrigerator cold. I had to warm it up in the microwave myself. When I did, the taste was so disgusting that I spit it out. The potatoes had some kind of awful unrecognizable spice that was so noxious that I had to seek out some mints to get it out of my mouth. The next evening they served EXACTLY the same thing, but on a piece of pork. Same yellow slime, same disgusting spiced potatoes. I asked the server what it was but even she didn’t know. Over the course of the three horrible days that we were there, nobody from the leadership contacted me. I had the number of the salesperson and I texted her. She sent back a phone number. I replied that I was not going to chase them down. I deserved a call. When Lorella finally called me, she covered her tracks by telling a fairy tale that they want clients to get settled in before they said anything. She scheduled an appointment for two days hence. On the last day, as I watched my poor wife gently forking food fit for the Soviet Gulag into her mouth, I had a panic attack. I was so overcome with grief and horror that I took her home. On the way out, I was prevented briefly from leaving with her. A few days later, when my movers came to take all the furniture home, an employee starting berating them that they needed to go faster. I thought it was the final insult. But more was to come. I was told I would get a refund for the medical care she did not receive during the 27 days she was not to be there, but I had to reach out at least a dozen times before it arrived 2 months later. The people downstairs in the regular unit seemed happy enough. I am sure they were getting better food. My opinion is that the memory unit is a dumping ground. I can’t state strongly enough, if your loved one is still even marginally cognizant, or if you care about them in any fashion, do NOT put her in Sunrise. Corey was a small bright spot. He tried his best, but the institution is rotten.

Such a lovely home for my grandmother. The staff have been so kind and caring for her. We were so scared to make this move and they helped reassure us every step of the way.
