Senior Commons at Powder Mill

This was a good fit for our mom. She was in need of a more secure space although she was quite independent. She lived here for exactly one year before recently passing. The staff treated her very well and got to know her right away. Shannon Cook the director was responsive and easy to work with. Some of her favorite people were med tech, Juanita, med tech, Anthony, who was always very patient with her when she did not want her medicine. She liked interacting with med techs Kim and Andrea as well. PCA’s London, Aiesha, Maddie, Callie, Sandy, Linda, as well as Caitlin, Toby, Urelli and Millie were always quick to help and share a smile or hug when she needed a little redirecting. The physical therapy she received from Fox was also great. They were helping to keep her strong with exercises. The food provided is a great variety, and it is great to have options for the each meal, our mom very rarely complained, and she used to be a cook.My mom, Gwen’s favorite activity was the live music, anytime friends were in to perform, my mom was there to sing along and sometimes even dance. I would recommend this assisted living home. I found them to be accommodating and flexible. They sure have some caring staff members too, I could not list them all..🥰

Very poor staffing to meet ratio of residents in Memory Care. They mandate residents to care for your loved oe with an independent outside caregivers service. Their excuse was the state required. Their staff is to be trained to care for behavior symptoms which obviously comes along with dementia patients. They had on staff one caregiver for entire floor of residents many times we visited. . Their business practice on this is deceptive. Never told when signed contract. You paid their cost plus 24 hour nursing service from an outside source. This is very wrong! THEY DISCUSSED NOTHING! They ghosted my messages regarding his improvement by the psychiatrist and chose to ignore me. He has no problems where he is now and the home he is in now does not even understand the extra care they required?. This is nothing more than a cover up for "poor staffing ".

I really have two ratings: Independent living I rate a 4. Memory Care I rate a 1 Dad spent six months in independent living. Limited services were provided to him. The services that were provided were good. Maureen in activities did a wonderful job and the staff in the dining room were attentive and helpful. Dad needed full time care, and we had a live in caregiver who helped him. The room was large and clean and bright and it was a good fit for our needs. Dad passed away at Senior Commons. 2 years later, we selected SC for mom after our good experience with Dad. Mom had to be in memory care. The problems we encountered are too numerous to list here but some of the top issues are: Your loved one will be left unattended for many hours, many times noone checked on mom for 6 hour periods; we were told on the first week that we needed to hire our own caretakers for "awake hours" to supplement Senior Commons care for mom, this was a surprise. We complied and hired our own caretakers for 16 hrs/day; the log maintained by staff are not accurate, on many occasions they indicated mom was showered and pills given when they were not; noone answers the phone after hours. If you don't have around the clock private pay caretakers with your loved one, do not put them in memory care at Senior Commons. In a nutshell the problems stem from poor management. Our family experienced similar issues with the recent (female) director as noted in the recent poor review listed on this site. Staff is capable of doing a good job but management is not attentive and not effective. The good manager they had for memory care was not given support from management and left in a few short months. Mom fell and laid on the floor for hours before being transported to the hospital. Once in the hospital we decided not to go back to senior commons. She is now receiving great care elsewhere.

Senior Commons at Powder Mill has such a welcoming and caring atmosphere. I’m so grateful to know my mom is in such good hands. The staff go above and beyond, treating everyone like family. The facility is clean, comfortable, and full of activities too!
