Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away while at Kingston. He had been admitted following a fall at home that resulted in a head injury. What was supposed to be a two-week rehab was ultimately a stay of more than 6 months. During those first two weeks, despite being a fall risk, he returned to his room alone after breakfast and fell again while closing his door. It is unknown to me how long it took for someone to find him but when I arrived a couple of days later from out of town, he was still reporting significant pain. I was with him FOUR days after the fall when they wheeled in a portable x-ray machine and realized he had actually broken his femur. An ambulance arrived within a few minutes and he had surgery the following morning, and was promptly returned to Kingston for "rehab". A World War II veteran, he was fiercely stubborn and independent. The staff that I encountered were all very caring and attentive to him when possible, however in my opinion, they did not have enough employees to monitor the patients. He would have to wait 20-40 minutes at times for assistance getting to the restroom, and would go many days without a shower. Not having a 24/7 personal nurse, he would try to get up and do these things on his own, often unsuccessfully. A second fall and a second surgery prolonged his stay. He had been taken abruptly from his home in an ambulance after that first fall. My grandmother had recently passed and all he wanted was to return home to familiar surroundings that reminded him of her. I called in an Ombudsman for an assessment and opinion of his return home with home health care, which she agreed he had the mental faculties to understand the implications of such. Despite my efforts to coordinate and pay for home care, and due to private conversations between the Kingston social worker and a family member who had been appointed as POA/HCPOA, his release was not granted and he stayed beyond the 6 months of Medicare coverage as a private pay patient. During his stay, 1 of the 2 elevators was broken for months with no public access to the stairway. This concerned me for safety and evacuation implications in the event of a fire or tornado. And it was always FREEZING. Residents in the dining area were wrapped in blankets. Electric blankets, hot water bottles and hot hands/feet packets were prohibited. My poor grandpa could never get warm. Eventually he ate so little his body shut down. In my opinion, if he had not broken his femur while in the care of Kingston, he would have returned home to pass away much more comfortably. *Note* - When researching rehab facilities, ask what the patient to staff ratio is, and what is their goal for response time to assistance requests. Ask if they are required to report accidents in the facility, or any allegations of abuse or neglect. Ask to see the public records. Also, be sure that anyone appointed as POA for your family members will be prepared to fully disclose details and be willing to discuss options rather than make unilateral decisions based on convenience rather than the patient's wishes.

My mom stayed here (twice!) after knee replacement surgery and absolutely loved it. The staff were very encouraging and attentive. She enjoyed the food and the overall atmosphere and still loves to brag that she holds a record for post-surgical knee flex from the rehab team. Keep up the great work!
